Welcome
Hello, and welcome, to the digital manifestation of my imagination. Sound fascinates me in so many ways, and my mission with my work is to explore it. To change the way people see life, by the way they hear. Not to overtake the other four senses, but to complement them, and to offer a better understanding by examining the details. So all in all, what I do is not really about sound, it's all about creating moving experiences; i.e., emotion and feeling, through the world's most amazing bio-microphones: our ears.
Baby Bubbles and much, much, more
MY, oh, my, it's been an interesting year. I've acquired lots of new things, including, but not limited to- a new Sound Devices 633 Recorder, a Schoeps CMC 6U/MK41 kit, lots of hardware, new monitors, a Pro Tools 11 HD license (upgraded finally; wewt!), and some other goodies. Perhaps I'll blog later on all that. Given my track record of not blogging much (that includes the unpublished ones you've yet to see), I can't make any promises yet. But for now, please enjoy this complimentary Baby Bubble sound effect! The director asked me to send it to him as a ringtone (it's his daughter), so I decided to take it one step further and share it here with the world. Wild, candid chatter, straight from the set of #NGLfilm- which, by the way, I can't wait to share more of. I'm now delighted to be offering mix services in up to 7.1 surround. The software licensing restricted me up until this point, so I had to resort to other means or mixing in other studios. No longer.

It's been a good week. Both Wraith (2013) and The Morning Tide (2013) are wrapped. Well, I don't want to break the "never say final" rule, but they are pretty much finished. Contact me directly if you'd like to view either one. Now, it's time to kick back, grab a drink with an umbrella in the top, and get… back to work on some sound effects editing. Hooray! Micha (2013) & Broken (2013)

Today, Micha has an officially completed stereo mix. I have to say that I'm pleased, though the time allowed for audio post was short. I was hoping the 5.1 surround mix would come first, then be folded down into LtRt to save time, but desperate times call for stereo mixes (don't they?). It will be upmixed (and have more meticulous sound design), but we're all happy here, so go check it out here.
In other news, I participated in a fun and fast 48-hour film competition here in Dallas earlier this month. Our team didn't win, but it did take home "Audience Favorite," "Best Use of Prop," and "Best Zombie FX." I was the sound designer (but not the composer). I was also away from Kyma, but that didn't stop me from using some Kyma-synthesized effects in it.

Similarly, Wraith (2013) is another short I've recently begun designing sound for that is getting a generous helping of abstract processing and over-the-top sound effects. Special thanks to Frank Bry for being the real (anti?)-hero with his sound libraries.

The Whale (2011)

You can now view The Whale in its entirety. This is a student film I did sound work on during my last days in college. It went on to compete in a number of film competitions around the world. To see the film and where it went, visit this page. Keep in mind that there is a lot of bass information in this film. I mean, it should go without saying, but make sure you watch this on full range speakers, otherwise you'll miss a lot. This is before I learned about bass management and the psychoacoustics of the missing fundamental.
Another fun fact is that it competed in Dallas, TX against Spike Jonze's excellent short, Mourir Auprès de Toi (To Die by Your Side). Of course, when I say "competed against," what I really mean is "lost to." |

An Update About Updates

New info coming soon... I've been making some changes to my location recording rig. Rethinking; re-evaluating. Early this year, I joined The Sound Collector's Club, a community dedicated to sharing specific field recordings among audio professionals; much like a sonic scavenger hunt. In light of this, I've been thinking more and more about the recording process, how to best approach it with the equipment I have, and how to plan for the future.
A Sub-update (about updates) [June 7th, 2013]: Reassembling my recording rig has proved to be a much bigger task than I anticipated, resulting in a lack of said updates. In short, I've been purchasing and assembling hardware to support five channel atmos and sfx recording (sort of an "unofficial surround;" two stereo pairs and a center shotgun mic), while also pursuing new microphones entirely. By the end of the month I should have 1 Sennheiser MKH 416 and 2 Line Audio CM3's. As of yet, I've been using a Sennheiser ME66, and the built it XY and Omni pairs on my Roland R-26 recorder. The 416 and CM3 pair has been the shifting goal since I posted this originally in April, and many of the TSCC collections I plan to record for have been put off until I obtain the new microphones. So, for anyone wondering, I will be eventually updating the world on something other than updates. I do have a new blog coming as well. Check the Downloads page for a sneak peak.

Taking a Look at Phase RotationIn this presentation by Pete Johnston, he demonstrates a rotating square wave, among other things. The oscilloscope shows a continuously changing waveform, but sonically, there is no difference. After a moment, I realized I was watching the square wave spin three-dimensionally. As it rotates in phase, we see a different view of the same wave. I put together a GIF animation, which can be seen here.
